Koh Similan means “Nine Islands” because the word “Similan” is actually Malaysian word for “Nine” and the word Koh is the Thai word for “Island. The whole of Similan is a dedicated to the Marine National Park which is the reason why development of the islands are kept to a minimum and it is still very much a paradise lost and a diver’s Shangri-la. The Similan Islands are located in the Andaman Sea on the West Coast of Southern Thailand, in Lam Kaen, District of Phang-nga. The Similan archipelago consists of islands which are called Koh Bangu, Koh Bon, Koh Ha, Koh Hin Pousar, Koh Huyong, Koh Meang, Koh Payan, Koh Payu and Koh Tachai. This is the perfect destination for tourist that like to dive and snorkel and explorer remote desolated places full of wildlife. The largest island is Koh Similan and all the Similan Islands are surrounded by crystal clear shallow waters that harbor excite rock formations and spectacular coral reefs. The marine life around the Islands is unmatched in Thailand and the region.
Koh Payu is known as one of the best snorkeling and dive sites of all the islands. It provides spectacular coral heads covered with soft fans, wire corals, and a superb combination of coral species and colorful tropical sea life. Some parts of the island have massive boulders inhabited by larger species of fish, including reefs and the occasional sea turtles.
Honeymoon Bay is a beautiful bay on the east side of Island # 4 with its quiet beach and tranquility it is the perfect place for a snorkel or a night dive on the gentle slopping reefs. The shallow area is ideal for night dives as it offers sheltered easy diving with a great variety of marine life and the whole reef comes alive at night with hundreds of shrimps covering the coral blocks. If you look at the base of the coral blocks you often see the big red coral crabs, swell as hermit crabs and the occasional decorator crab walking across the reef. It also has many spiny lobsters which come out at night to feed, as well as the giant morays, octopus, lion fish that covers the reefs.
Donald Duck Bay is the most recognizable and photographed landmark in the Similan’s. Donald Duck Bay is named after a rock on the north side of the bay that resembles the cartoon character – not the most prominent large boulder that balances precariously at a seemingly impossible angle, known as sail rock, but another rock in front and slightly further out of the bay. It has several friendly, large green turtles and you are more than likely to come across them.
Christmas Point is on Island number 9 at Koh Ba Ngu of the Similans, on the North West side. This is a boulder site with many swim-through holes available. The name comes from the many Christmas tree worms which have embedded themselves into the reef and rocks around the area. As you descend you find huge boulder formations with sandy area’s between, great places for spotting Stingrays or blotch Fantail Rays.
This is a favorite site among divers and snorkelers as the area is known for having sittings of White Tip Reef Sharks and Leopard Sharks sleeping on the bottom. There can be large schools of chevron Barracuda along with Napoleon wrasse and Hawksbill turtles.
